In the past years, I have had the wonderful chance to experience some of the most thought-provoking, beautiful and original performances courtesy of The Welsh National Opera. Last night, I had the opportunity to witness the skills and talent of the gorgeous WNO Orchestra at the Welsh Prom.

A standing ovation and two hours of beautiful renditions of some of the most famous Hollywood blockbuster soundtracks later, we were definitely not prepared for how emotional the night would turn out to be. So here are our favourite things from the Movie Prom Great Film Composers night.

  1. The journey. Conductor Owain Arwel Hughes CBE took us on an epic journey of movies and great film composers from Superman to Star Trek and Indiana Jones. Every single performance was impeccable and the music was mesmerising.
  2. The music. It would be next to impossible to pick a favourite song from the range of beautiful performances we saw last night. However, [John Williams’] Schindler’s List violin solo deserves a special mention, it was the most powerful and beautiful rendition I had ever had the luck to see live. And, so was the interpretation of Jaws [John Williams].
  3. The message. Nothing better than music to raise your spirits, said presenter Roy Noble as he entertained us mid performance. Times are not the easiest but last night was a much needed reminder that there’s so much beauty and talent around us, especially in Wales, with the WNO orchestra being one of our most precious treasures.
