…the beautiful world of Emma Heathcote-James, founder of The Little Soap Company, a wonderful 100% organic soap brand passionate about reducing the amount of chemicals and synthetics people unwittingly rub into their skin.

Emma is the perfect guest for our tenth day of Christmas… so perfect she decided to run a competition in partnership with Miss Squiggles. Have a look below for more details…

In the meantime please meet our organic lady and CEO:

I am a morning person

Being very much a morning person I naturally wake early, practise yoga, and alternate either taking the dogs Harry and Mutley for a walk or going for a 5km run through the fields.

We live very rurally and I adore the quietness and being outside, it really helps me plan the day ahead and sets me up for the day. On a typical day I usually leave the house around 7-7.30ish and head over to our beautiful offices in The Cotswolds for 8am. Again I love the quietness before everyone arrives to catch up on admin over a cup of tea, and if I’ve been really organised, a slice of homemade raw carrot cake or a bowl of porridge at my desk.

After that, every day is different which I love. One day I can be sitting with our designer as we create new packaging and labels, another I can be in the lab tweaking new liquid soap formulations, in London or up or down the country seeing buyers or in the workshop teaching a course our Little Soap School which I still try to do at least once a month – it’s a reminder of our roots, and I love teaching and seeing the transformation in people learning a new life skill.

At lunchtime I try to get out and walk up the road into the village. Broadway is utterly beautiful and it’s all too easy to lose track of time and work through lunch eating at your desk. In the afternoons I generally hold meetings with clients. This sometimes involve a demo in the workshop for buyers on how we make our organic soaps (which is way more fun than sitting around a boardroom table!). We are also heavily involved day to day with our website team and designers so there will generally be a few catch ups with them. To try and switch off I call en route home to The Dormy House Spa a couple of times a week for a quick swim or PT session. Evenings are either spent catching up over dinner with friends or curled up in front of the fire with a glass of wine with my partner and our animals, a great way to wind down and take a breather from the madness!

What our social media say about us…

Our last social media posts included a picture of our Little Soap School brochure – we always get chokka in the new year with people wanting to learn a new skill – and we offer courses in our workshop here from learning how to make pure natural soap, creams and balms, courses for mums to be on green skin care, making your own cleaning products as well as natural perfumery so there really is something for everyone as well as it being in a lovely setting – a perfect highlight to a Cotswold mini break!

A great tip for business women would be…

I, like most women who own their own businesses, tend to live, breath and sleep it! The most important (yet simple) piece of advice I’ve ever been given is to look after yourself. Being an entrepreneur is a lifestyle not a 9-to-5 job where you can switch off and close the door on things. It’s easy to sit at your desk for hours on end, accidentally working 12-18 hour days, especially at the start. Don’t make excuses: eat right, diarise exercise just as you would a meeting, and just as you find time for work find time for yourself, for holidays and for your loved ones. It’s when you don’t have the time that you need to make it all the more so. You’re the most vital element of your own business so its hugely important you’re operating in peak condition. Really look after your mind, body and spirit …the company will run more smoothly, be more creative, successful and most of all more fun, I promise !
